1. Download VSCO
VSCO is a free smartphone app for editing your images. Start by downloading the app on your iPhone or Android phone here.
Do you take photos on a digital camera? No problem! This camera to phone SD reader makes it possible for you to upload photos from your digital camera’s SD card onto your phone! If you use this, it makes editing photos taken from your camera on VSCO and uploading them on social media so freakin’ effortless.
2. Choose the Photo
Start by choosing one photo to edit. After you open the app, press the “+” on the top right hand corner. This opens your photo album and allows you to choose the photos you want to add to your VSCO library!
Once your photos are added to your VSCO library, select one by clicking it. The photo you select should have a border. Then, on the bottom of the screen, tap the “edit” icon.

3. Choose Your Favorite Photo Filter
VSCO offers a variety of free and paid photo filters. For this tutorial, I used the free “C1” filter. You can adjust how strong you want the filter to be. I kept this filter at its default setting, 12.0.
For VSCO photo filter inspiration, check out and follow this Pinterest Photo Filters board. Speaking of Pinterest, are you following me yet? And for all you bloggers out there, make sure you join this Pinterest group board to pin your favorite blog posts!
Okay, back to business! After you select your filter, press the white bar at the bottom (it has a tiny arrow on it). Tap on the edit button again so you can continue editing the image!
4. Adjust Photo Settings to Your Preference
I love playing around with the settings on VSCO! For this tutorial, I adjusted the settings in the following way:
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out which icon means what. When you’re just starting to familiarize yourself with the app, you can use this icon guide provided by VSCO as a reference.
5. Use VSCO’s “Copy Edits” Option to Create Consistency
Instagrams look great when the photos are displayed with consistent, or similar, edits. But, who wants to have to go through this tedious process every time? It would be a pain to remember the settings that you used on a previous photo. Take advantage of VSCO’s Copy Edits option!
- Open the VSCO library menu
- Click on the photo whose edits you want to copy
- Press the ellipses on the bottom corner
- Click copy edits
- Then, select the photo(s) in your library you want to apply edits to
- Click the ellipses again
- Press “paste edits”
You can easily adjust the settings if you think that a photo turned out to be too dark, or too light. After you paste the edits, if you’re not happy with the result, select the photo. From there, simply click the edit button at the bottom of your screen and adjust the settings until you’re satisfied!
With all the edits, this is how the photo turned out:
Bonus: How I Crop my Photos
I like to display photos in a consistent way. This includes the photo size. When I crop an image for my blog, I use the 3:2 ratio. While you’re adjusting the settings on your image, you can use VSCO’s cropping tool to do this.
Then, I resize each image’s width to 800 pixels using WordPress. My photo sizes end up being approximately 800×532. VSCO and WordPress make work easier as a blogger! (BTW: Self hosted WordPress is the best option for your blog. Learn how you can get started today!)
All in all, using VSCO is a great, effortless way to create consistent images for your brand. Want to turn your beautiful digital photos into prints?
